Every year, Americans celebrate the nation’s independence with fireworks and sparklers. While these displays are a great way to celebrate, they also cause an increase in emergency room visits and fire department incidents.
Thousands of people are injured every year by fireworks and sparklers. Sparklers can burn at temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees. Considering that these are often given to children with little warning or instruction, it is easy to understand why nearly 1,000 children are treated in the hospital from sparklers each year.
Pets are also affected by sparklers, bottle rockets and firecrackers. Many pets are unfamiliar with the sounds of fireworks and may suffer needless anxiety.
The Kenosha Fire Department understands the desire to celebrate July 4th with family and friends. All we ask is that you do it in a manner that prioritizes everyone’s safety.
- Make sure to abide by local and State regulations for allowable fireworks. Kenosha has an ordinance of which fireworks are allowable in the City.
- Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers.
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose at hand.
- Light fireworks one at a time.
- Move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
- Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks.
- Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse.
- Never point or throw fireworks at anyone.
- After fireworks complete their burning, douse with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device.
- Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
