Kenosha County will hold its annual Veterans Breakfast and Resource Fair on Saturday, November 1, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Kenosha County Job Center, according to an announcement by County Executive Samantha Kerkman. The event is free and open to the public, with doors opening at 8:30 a.m.
The breakfast, sponsored by Piasecki Funeral Home, will be served at 9:15 a.m. The morning’s program includes military honors and the playing of the national anthem at 9 a.m. Informational vendors will be present throughout the event, and Gateway Technical College student barbers will offer free haircuts.
“It’s an honor to celebrate with our veterans and their supporters at this event every year, and it’s a wonderful kickoff to the series of ceremonies and programs that follow on Veterans Day and in the days leading up to it,” Kerkman said.
The resource fair is part of several events scheduled in Kenosha County for Veterans Day and the preceding days. Other activities include school programs, community breakfasts, ceremonies hosted by local organizations such as American Legion Post 21 and VFW Post 1865, as well as events held at schools like Jeffery Elementary and Wilmot Union High School.
For example, on November 6th Jeffery Elementary will invite veterans into classrooms for discussions with students. On November 7th Christian Life School will host a program followed by a reception at Journey Church Auditorium. Lord of Life Lutheran Church will hold a worship service later that day with lunch provided.
Additional events include breakfasts at Village Pub of Silver Lake on November 8th; ceremonies in Pleasant Prairie on November 9th; an honor dinner hosted by Gateway Technical College on November 10th; multiple observances across schools and veterans’ organizations on November 11th; as well as special guest speakers such as retired Army veteran Joshua Deron.
Kenosha County schools serve diverse student populations during these commemorations. In the current school year, Indian Trail High School and Academy has the highest enrollment among county schools with over two thousand students enrolled. Tremper High School follows with nearly fifteen hundred students while Bradford High School has slightly fewer than that (https://dpi.wi.gov/).
Demographic data show that white students make up just over half of all Kenosha County school enrollments for this academic year—a slight decrease from last year—while Hispanic students represent about one-quarter of total enrollment. Black students are the third largest group (https://dpi.wi.gov/). American Indian students remain among the least represented groups within county schools (https://dpi.wi.gov/).
