The Kenosha Fire Department announced on Apr. 28 that it will conduct a training burn at 2214 57th Street on Friday, May 8, as part of a redevelopment project led by the City Development Department. The property is owned by the City of Kenosha and fire personnel and equipment will be present in the area throughout the day.

The exercise is designed to give firefighters hands-on experience with realistic fire conditions, including search and rescue, fire attack, ventilation, and safety procedures. According to the department’s announcement, this is a planned and controlled event with no danger to the public. Residents are advised not to call 911 if they see smoke or smell burning materials in the area during the exercise.

Equipment staging will begin at approximately 7 a.m., with live fire exercises starting around 9 a.m. The final burn-down of the structure is scheduled for about 2 p.m., when residents can expect to see increased smoke in the area. Several road closures will be in effect from approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., including closure of 57th Street from 22nd Avenue to 23rd Avenue and limited access along parts of both streets.

Residents living nearby are encouraged to park their vehicles off-street due to restricted road access during these hours. The department said that all activities comply with NFPA 1403 standards set by the National Fire Protection Association for firefighter and civilian safety; necessary abatement and inspections have been completed, with documentation approved by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Any updates or changes will be posted on both the City of Kenosha website and Kenosha Fire Department Facebook page. William Swanson, Division Chief of Training for Kenosha Fire Department, provided contact information for further inquiries.
