The Kenosha Water Utility announced on April 17 that it conducted a sewer bypass on April 15 to prevent property damage after significant rainfall. The bypass started at 7 a.m. and ended at 8 a.m. at the intersection of 89th Street and 17th Avenue.

The event was prompted by the city receiving 2.78 inches of rain over a two-day period, with ground already saturated from earlier storms in April. To manage the excess flow in the sanitary sewer collection system, diluted wastewater was discharged into the storm sewer system and ultimately flowed into Lake Michigan.

According to the utility, all such bypasses are reported to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as part of standard procedure.

Residents seeking more information or who have questions can contact the Kenosha Water Utility at 262-653-4300.
