Kenosha Unified School District (KUSD) has announced the return of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which will provide nutritious meals to local children throughout the summer. The announcement was made in a press release on March 20, 2025.
According to the press release, the SFSP is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. It offers free, nutritious meals to children aged 18 years and under during the summer months when school meals are unavailable. Additionally, individuals over 18 who are determined to be mentally or physically disabled and participate in a school program may also receive meals. The program will operate from June 17 to July 24 at various Kenosha locations, including Brass Elementary, Harvey Elementary, and Reuther High, with breakfast and lunch available at designated times. Meals must be consumed on-site, and no meals will be served on Fridays.
“This program fills a void created when school lunches are not available,” said Emily Riedler in the press release. “Helping parents meet the nutritional needs of their children is the strength of this program.”
The Kenosha Unified School District’s Food Service Department serves nearly 19,000 students daily, providing healthy breakfast and lunch options. For the 2024-25 school year, all KUSD students are eligible to receive meals at no charge through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). Additional benefits like Title 1 and athletic scholarships may require completing separate applications.
The Kenosha Unified School District was established in 1967 and serves the City of Kenosha, Village of Pleasant Prairie, and the Town and Village of Somers in southeastern Wisconsin. It operates multiple educational institutions including elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, charter schools, choice schools, a specialty school, and a Head Start center. The district has a total enrollment of 19,069 students with an annual operational expenditure of approximately $304 million.
