The recent Leadership Kenosha session provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the pressing issues in Kenosha County and equipped them with project management skills to address these challenges. The day began at the Hope Hub, located within the Shalom Center, where local leaders Carolynn Friesch and Tamarra Coleman discussed social and economic issues such as housing insecurity and food shortages.
Carolynn Friesch, CEO of United Way of Kenosha County, along with Tamarra Coleman, Executive Director of the Shalom Center, shared data illustrating the scope of poverty, homelessness, and food security concerns. They emphasized how these challenges are interconnected, often forcing families to make difficult choices between essential needs like rent and groceries.
A poverty simulation exercise was conducted to help participants experience the daily struggles faced by individuals with limited resources. This exercise aimed to foster empathy and highlight the crucial role played by organizations like United Way and the Shalom Center in supporting those in need.
In the afternoon session led by Dee Ford from Gateway Technical College, attendees focused on project management skills necessary for community impact. Participants learned about setting measurable goals, breaking down tasks, defining roles, and creating timelines. These skills are vital for turning big ideas into actionable projects that can benefit the community.
