The Kenosha County Division of Highways has issued a reminder to residents regarding the legal and safety implications of depositing snow and ice from driveways onto roadways and highway shoulders. This practice is not only dangerous but also illegal, according to Highway Director Greg Boldt.

Boldt pointed out that Wisconsin Statute "Rules of the Road" clearly states: “No person shall place or cause to be placed upon a highway any foreign substance which is or may be injurious to any vehicle or part thereof.” Those found violating this statute face a $50 forfeiture for each offense.

Moreover, if an accident occurs due to snow or ice deposited on a roadway, the individual responsible can be held liable for any resulting injuries and property damage, Boldt added.

In addition to these guidelines, drivers are advised to exercise caution when driving near snowplows. State law mandates that vehicles must maintain a distance of at least 200 feet behind a snowplow engaged in removing snow or ice on highways with speed limits exceeding 35 mph. Violations of this regulation can result in a $175 fine and three demerit points on the driver's license.
