- Carthage Theatre’s 14th annual New Play Initiative, in collaboration with West End House School of Arts, presents the world premiere of “Memento Mori,” directed by Professor Neil Scharnick! Performances will occur in the Wartburg Theatre.
Nov. 10-12 | 7:30 p.m.
“Memento Mori” is a fantastical story woven from the collective minds of the ensemble and directors, all grappling with life’s biggest questions: Why are we here? Why does that matter? And what comes next? The play is a modern and imaginative reflection on mortality, grief, and the afterlife developed by the student ensemble and faculty director Neil Scharnick in partnership with West End House School of Arts in Killarney, Ireland.
The Carthage Theatre Department has been commissioning acclaimed playwrights to create plays and work with Carthage students in the New Play Initiative program since 2009. These playwrights have won awards such as Oscars, Emmys, Jeffs, Obies, and Golden Globes. Through the New Play Initiative, students have the opportunity to make history and experience all that comes with being a part of the creative process. The production isn’t only a new play for the season but a brand new play for the world of theatre. Many such shows from the initiative have received honors and awards at the annual Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. This year, in collaboration with the West End House School of Arts, Carthage students have been given a chance to collaborate on “Memento Mori,” an original play, making every participant in the project a playwright.
The cast of “Memento Mori” includes: Nicky Caldwell ’23, Rayven Craft ’23, Emily Halfmann ’24, Grace Hanson ’25, Sarah Loster ’25, Bree Meinke ’24, Elizabeth Neybert ’25, Rose Reichert ’23, Becca Robertson ’23, Melissa Schmidt ’25, and Makayla Steinberg ’25.
The Wartburg Theatre is located inside the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Natural and Social Sciences.
