Kenosha Unified School District (KUSD) has announced that Somers Elementary staff will host a community event centered on "mindful moments" on April 9. The announcement was made in a press release dated March 31, 2025.
According to KUSD, the community is invited to the "Mindful Moments" event scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. The evening will feature a family meal, mindfulness activities, a family yoga session, and a guided art activity. This event is open to all and will take place at Somers Elementary, located at 1245 72nd Avenue.
Somers Elementary School emphasizes character development, academic excellence, and fostering strong partnerships with families and the community. The school implements culturally responsive practices aimed at helping students develop skills as resourceful learners, effective communicators, critical thinkers, and responsible citizens. The Leader in Me program offers students opportunities to enhance their leadership skills while a student-run weekly newscast highlights school events and achievements. The school prioritizes learning-centered technology.
April Nelson serves as the principal of Somers Elementary School. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary/Middle School Education from Marquette University and a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Aurora University. Nelson began her career in 1999 and joined Kenosha Unified in 2004. She previously served as principal at Stocker Elementary where she led initiatives in behavior and academics.
The Kenosha Unified School District (KUSD), established in 1967, serves the City of Kenosha, Village of Pleasant Prairie, and the Town and Village of Somers in southeastern Wisconsin.
