National Drug Take Back Day will see collection events at six sites in Kenosha County on Saturday, April 26. This initiative was announced by County Executive Samantha Kerkman.
The collection sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The locations are: Johnson Bank in Kenosha, the New Pleasant Prairie Police Station, Somers Fire & Rescue, the Kenosha County Center in Bristol, Twin Lakes Police Department, and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Residents can dispose of unneeded medications safely and at no cost. "I encourage people to make use of this easy, free way to dispose of medications," Kerkman stated. Additionally, visitors can learn about community resources for substance use and receive Narcan training.
Narcan and information about Kenosha County Behavioral Health Services will be available at all sites except for Twin Lakes Police Department and UW-Parkside. Narcan is used to reverse opioid overdoses and training helps individuals recognize overdose symptoms and administer the drug.
Accepted items for disposal include prescription and over-the-counter medications, ointments, patches, and vape pens with batteries removed. Unacceptable items include illegal drugs, needles, biohazardous materials, and household hazardous waste.
The events are a collaboration between the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, local police departments, Somers Fire & Rescue, Johnson Bank, and the Kenosha County Division of Behavioral Health Services.
