Kenosha Unified School District (KUSD) has been awarded the Lunch Trailblazer Award by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK). The recognition comes as a result of KUSD's efforts to enhance school lunch nutrition through the inclusion of more fresh produce, clean protein, and limited-time specials.
According to a press release, KUSD's award acknowledges its commitment to improving school lunches by adhering to sodium guidelines and implementing initiatives aimed at boosting student engagement and nutrition education. These efforts include offering limited-time meal specials that introduce fresh ingredients and trending food items, creating excitement while promoting healthier eating habits.
The award also highlights KUSD’s dedication to providing nutritious meals in alignment with the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. As part of this recognition, KUSD will receive both local and national acknowledgment, including a travel stipend to attend the Healthy Meals Summit.
"We congratulate Kenosha Unified on this important achievement," said Rob Bisceglie, Executive Officer and President for Action for Healthy Kids. "The HMI Recognition Awards are an opportunity to showcase innovative school nutrition practices that provide children with access to nutritious school meals," Bisceglie added.
Kenosha Unified School District’s Food Service Department serves nearly 19,000 students daily with healthy breakfast and lunch options. For the 2024-25 school year, all KUSD students will be eligible to receive meals at no charge through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). However, additional benefits such as Title 1 and athletic scholarships may require completing separate applications.
