Carthage College Athletic Department issued the following announcement on Dec. 20

The Carthage women's basketball team remained hot, winning their sixth game in the past seven contests today, as they took down UW-Stevens Point 62-52 on Monday afternoon in the Berg Gym.

While the home team was first to score on their opening possession, the Firebirds (7-3) responded with a three from Lauren Knight moments later. Yet another make from beyond the arc for Carthage, this time by Ayanna Ester, made it a 6-4 game, before the team led by as much as nine in the first quarter. After entering the second period with a 17-11 advantage, the Pointers (7-4) quickly got within two points, 18-16. The two foes traded scores in the final few minutes of the first half, with UW-Stevens Point hitting a pair of threes, while a layup from Knight and three by Ester kept the Firebirds in control 28-24 at the halftime horn.

Knight found Destiny Antoine down low for a two to begin the half, before the sophomore guard from Mokena, Ill. dished out her sixth assist of the game, to Antoine again, this time for three. Knight hit a three of her own moments later, before Carthage extended their lead to as much as 15. However, UW-Stevens Point climbed back in, making it a three-point game by the end of the third period.

The home team kept it close to start the fourth, as the Firebirds held just a 50-48 advantage with 7:38 remaining in regulation. A three from Addison Ebeling, however, sparked a 12-0 run, as Carthage held on for their fourth win on the road this season.

The Firebirds will take a short break before returning to action on Wednesday, December 29, when they travel to play in the Country Inn and Suites Holiday Classic tournament hosted by St. Olaf.
