The City of Kenosha will begin its fall curbside compostables collection program on Monday, October 6, 2025. The service will run through Saturday, November 29, 2025. Residents are required to use city-approved biodegradable bags for their compostable materials. Acceptable brands include Bag To Nature, BioBag, and Ecoguard. Compostables placed in non-approved bags will not be collected.
Residents should place the approved bags at the curb in a separate pile after 6:30 p.m. on the day before their scheduled pickup or by 6 a.m. on collection day. Each bag must not exceed 40 pounds in weight.
Collected compostables are processed into high-grade compost, which is made available free of charge to city residents when supplies allow. The use of biodegradable bags has led to lower collection and processing costs while improving the quality of the finished compost.
To promote participation and help with expenses related to purchasing biodegradable bags, the city is offering a $2 coupon for each box of approved compostable bags purchased. Coupons can be obtained at several locations: City of Kenosha Department of Public Works and City Clerk (625 52nd Street), Kenosha Water Utility (4401 Green Bay Road), and on the city's website at www.kenosha.org.
Each coupon applies to one box or bundle of biodegradable bags with a limit of four coupons per visit; they are only valid at Kenosha-area retailers and cannot be used for previous purchases.
Approved biodegradable yard waste bags are available at Prairie Side Ace Hardware, Festival Foods, Lowe’s, JC Licht Ace Hardware, Menards, Woodman's Market, and Piggly Wiggly stores in the area.
For questions about the program, residents can contact the City of Kenosha Department of Public Works at 262-653-4050.
