Milt Dean, a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War, has been named the recipient of the first Kenosha County Veteran of the Year Award. The award will be presented later this week, as announced by County Executive Samantha Kerkman.
The newly established award is set to be given annually to recognize veterans for their achievements and contributions after their military service. Dean's extensive community involvement includes 52 years in education, active participation in veterans' organizations, and significant blood donations.
Kerkman remarked on the decision: “We received many outstanding nominations for this award, but Milt’s many contributions to the community and his passion for education and advocacy for veterans put him above all others.” She added that Dean embodies the spirit of service that the award aims to celebrate.
Dean will receive the honor at the Veterans Appreciation Summer Picnic at Kenosha County Veterans Memorial Park on Friday, May 30. The event is free and open to veterans and their families.
Jackie Dean, his wife of 54 years, nominated him for the award, describing him as “a proud veteran, loyal to both our country and our county.”
Expressing his gratitude, Dean stated: “I feel very honored and fortunate being chosen as the first recipient of the Kenosha County Veteran of the Year Award.” He thanked County Executive Kerkman for initiating this recognition for veterans.
Dean's post-service career includes a long tenure as an elementary school teacher and coach. His efforts earned him recognition as Teacher of the Year by Kenosha Unified School District in 1986. Beyond teaching, he has supported youth sports through Little League baseball sponsorships and involvement with various community organizations.
His volunteer work extends to raising funds for Special Olympics and organizing events with veterans' groups such as American Legion Post 21. His dedication to blood donation has provided more than 15 gallons of lifesaving blood over time.
Jennifer Blasi, Kenosha County Veterans Services Director, praised Dean's dedication: “When it comes to veterans in our community actively serving the community, Milt is second to none.”
Jackie Dean highlighted her husband's impact across different age groups through his unwavering commitment to service in her nomination statement.
The Veterans Appreciation Picnic will take place at noon on Friday at Kenosha County Veterans Memorial Park. It marks its third year celebrating local veterans.
